PROJECT UPDATE The Memphis District published a Notice of Intent in the Federal Register describing its intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the project. The EIS is being prepared to address and evaluate the environmental, economic, and social impacts of alternative plans to provide flood control and develop and discuss locations and methodologies of potential compensatory mitigation. Click on the following link to the Federal Register Notice. A public scoping meeting was conducted on 11 May 2010 at 7:00 PM in the East Prairie Church of God, 322 N. Washington Street, East Prairie, MO 63845. A copy of the public scoping process can be found at the following link: Public Scoping Prior to determining an additional EIS is warranted, previous NEPA documents were consolidated and underwent an exhaustive review by an independent panel of experts. In addition, ecological models that were used in past analyses have also undergone review by an independent panel of experts. Results from both of the reviews were used to complete a Project Work Plan. The Project Work Plan describes the methodologies that will be used to complete the additional NEPA analysis. The Project Work Plan was submitted to the same panel of experts for review prior to conducting detailed analyses. USACE is currently conducting detailed analyses to determine significant impacts of the St. Johns Bayou and New Madrid Floodway Project. Restoration activities were completed on October 6, 2010 to comply with order issued September 13, 2007, by the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. |
