Position Title: Hydrologic Technician

Series: Hydrologic Technician 1316

Grade: GS-06/07/08

Salary Range: $38,921 - $62,269

Geographic Location: Memphis, TN

Work Schedule: Full-time: 4-10 hour days Mar-Nov and 5-8 hour days Dec-Feb

This is a developmental position in Engineering & Construction Division, Hydraulics & Hydrology Branch and may be filled at the GS-06, GS-07, or GS-08. If selected at the GS-06 or GS-07 level, the target level for this assignment is a GS-08. The grade level selected will be based upon your qualifications. Non-Competitive promotion to the GS- 08 may be effected provided you are sufficiently experienced, meet all requirements, and are performing the full scope of major duties.

Typical Duties of Position: Hydrologic Technicians must be able to independently conduct gage maintenance on a specified route, measure discharge at select gage locations, and correct gage data and enter discharge measurements into a database. Typically maintenance of gages includes painting, using basic hand tools to adjust components of a gage, troubleshooting gage issues, programming data collection platforms to transmit gage readings to satellites, and the ability to use Microsoft Office products to record gage maintenance reports and send emails. Additionally, technicians will measure discharge at select gage sites and must be able to use river analysis software to verify the accuracy of measurements collected in the field. Periodically, technicians will correct their gage data and enter discharge measurements into a database back at the office. At the GS-08 level, technicians will be able to install a new gage and complete every job function independently with little to no guidance from the lead technician or supervisor.

Competencies Needed: Ability to use Microsoft Office products and other software related to gage data and discharge measurements, make minor repairs to gage components, learn quickly and independently, analyze graphs and tabular data to verify the accuracy of gage readings, troubleshoot issues in the field, and follow standardized operating procedures.

   Qualification Requirements:

Minimum Experience - One year of experience related to: 1) Conducting work related to assisting in the collection, sampling, repair, programming, and compilation of simple data; 2) Experience assisting with procedures used in preparing simple river stage predictions; and 3) Familiarity with use and function of Microsoft Office products is required.

GS-06

Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position.

Combination Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.

GS-07

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position. OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.

GS-08

Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position. OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.
