Leading the way is routine for the Memphis District’s Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Section led by Chief Lindsay Barrios, GISP. For years, they have been leading the way in GIS technological advances for the district.
The GIS Team continues to push forward with technology to create new ways to gather, analyze, and visualize data. GIS is a technology that connects data to a map, allowing users to understand patterns and relationships in geographic context. GIS innovation is changing the way people interact with their environment and making it possible to make more informed decisions.
At a recent Lunch & Learn, the GIS Team unveiled new GIS products and received favorable feedback from subject matter experts, analysts, quality assurance specialists, and project managers.
New offerings unveiled during the Lunch & Learn include:
Memphis District Overview: A Web Map that references all our available Authoritative GIS Data, bringing all our live data into one location, ensuring everyone is viewing the same data.
Editing applications:
- One created for Subject Matter Experts to QA/QC data used by Project Delivery Teams (PDT).
- One created specifically for project managers to update Future Capabilities data for Congressional visits without the need to understand ArcPro software.
- PDT photo viewer web application.
- National Levee Database data service and public interface.
The new offerings will further the district team’s ability to analyze geospatial location and organize layers of information into robust visuals using maps and 3D scenes, providing deeper insights into data collections which leads to smarter plans and decisions for the future.
The GIS Team also briefly discussed the GIS Program Management Plan which includes a GIS Data Management Plan, as well as a 5-year Strategy for GIS in the District. The rollout of these plans aligns with Engineering & Construction Division leaders’ desire to revitalize the district’s Knowledge Management Program.
