MEMPHIS, Tenn., Sept. 12, 2007 – The Memphis District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will
begin an erosion control project later this fall along Red Duck Creek, directly adjacent to 9th Street in
Mayfield, Ky. Erosion in this area threatens the safety of the street, a major community thoroughfare.
Col. Thomas P. Smith, commander of the Corps’ Memphis District, and Mayfield Mayor Arthur
Byrn signed a Project Cooperation Agreement late last month establishing an important partnership and opening the way for Federal assistance.
“The Corps of Engineers is committed to helping local communities like Mayfield meet their
important water resource needs whenever we can,” Col. Smith said. “We’re very happy we can provide
them with the engineering services they need to keep this vital part of their public infrastructure safe.”
Work at Mayfield will include approximately 950 feet of stone riprap armoring along one bank
of the creek to provide streambank protection adjacent to 9th Street.
The cost of the project is currently $597,000 with $385,250 paid by the Federal government
under the Continuing Authorities Program and the balance paid by the City of Mayfield, Ky.
