VICKSBURG, Miss., Jan. 29, 2014 - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Grenada Lake Field Office and the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks will host a youth waterfowl hunt Feb. 1. The youth waterfowl hunt will be at the Benwood Waterfowl Management Area and will provide an opportunity for experienced waterfowl hunters to teach the younger generations proper techniques and ethics of the sport.
The youth hunters will be 10 to 15 years of age. All of the youth hunters will be accompanied by an adult 21 years of age or older, a Corps ranger, and a Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks conservation officer. The participants will be instructed about general knowledge of state and federal waterfowl hunting laws and regulations and the use of decoys, chest waders and duck calling.
All-terrain vehicles will be allowed in certain areas, but only foot traffic will be allowed in the wetland areas and agricultural fields.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is the largest federal provider of outdoor and water-based recreation in the nation. The Vicksburg District encompasses a 68,000-square-mile area across portions of Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana. The primary mission of the Mississippi lakes is to provide flood risk reduction.
